Ingredients & Substitutions

Main Ingredients:

Extra-firm tofu:
The foundation of this air fryer buffalo tofu recipe is a block of tofu, specifically extra firm tofu. Its dense texture is perfect for holding up under the heat of the air fryer, making it ideal for creating that crispy exterior. Pressing the tofu to remove excess water or excess liquid is essential to achieving the best results, as too much moisture can prevent the tofu from becoming crispy. Freezing and thawing the tofu is a great way to enhance the texture, giving it a meatier, chewy consistency, which makes these wings resemble traditional chicken wings.

Cornstarch or arrowroot powder:
This is your key ingredient for getting that crispy coating on the tofu. It helps the batter stick to the tofu and creates that desirable crunch. If you don’t have cornstarch, you can easily substitute with arrowroot powder, rice flour, or even tapioca starch.

Unsweetened plain almond milk or soy milk:
A plant-based milk like soy milk provides the liquid base for the batter. This helps the breadcrumbs adhere to the tofu, ensuring that your buffalo tofu air fryer recipe turns out crispy. Other options include oat milk or cashew milk if you prefer.

Panko breadcrumbs:
These breadcrumbs are lighter and flakier than traditional breadcrumbs, which makes them perfect for achieving that ultra-crispy texture. If you’re looking for a gluten-free alternative, you can use gluten-free panko bread crumbs. Toss them with spices like onion powder and paprika to give your tofu wings even more flavor.

Avocado oil or olive oil:
Both avocado oil and olive oil are great options for coating your tofu wings. A light drizzle or spray before air-frying helps enhance the crispiness. If you want a healthier option, avocado oil is preferred due to its higher smoke point, making it ideal for air fryer recipes.

Frank’s hot sauce:
The star of the show is the spicy buffalo sauce. Frank’s hot sauce is the most popular choice for creating a classic buffalo flavor, but feel free to adjust the amount to suit your taste preferences. For a little less heat, you can mix in extra melted vegan butter, or for a hotter kick, add more hot sauce or a sprinkle of cayenne pepper.

Vegan butter:
The butter provides a rich, creamy element to the vegan buffalo sauce, balancing out the spiciness of the hot sauce. Vegan margarine or coconut oil can also work if you’re out of vegan butter.

Garlic powder and onion powder:
These simple spices are essential for layering flavors into both the batter and the buffalo sauce. For extra depth, you can add smoked paprika or a dash of cayenne pepper for added heat.

Soy sauce:
If you’re looking to add a bit of umami flavor, soy sauce is a great way to deepen the taste of the tofu itself. Marinate the tofu cubes in a mixture of soy sauce and spices for at least 30 minutes before air-frying for enhanced flavor.

Substitutions:

  • Block of tofu:
If you’re making this for the first time and aren’t a fan of tofu’s texture, try using tempeh or seitan instead. Both options have a firmer texture and soak up marinades well. However, keep in mind that tofu texture can be transformed by pressing out much moisture and freezing it ahead of time for a chewier consistency.
  • Soy sauce:
If you’re avoiding soy, you can substitute tamari (gluten-free) or liquid aminos for a similar salty flavor.
  • Hot sauce:
Frank’s hot sauce is a classic for making vegan buffalo wings, but you can experiment with other brands or even mix it up by using sriracha or cholula for a different kind of heat.
  • Vegan butter:
If you prefer a healthier option, coconut oil or olive oil can be used instead of vegan butter in the buffalo sauce. Keep in mind that olive oil will result in a slightly different flavor, but it’s still delicious.
  • Panko bread crumbs:
For a gluten-free version, opt for gluten-free panko or crushed gluten-free crackers. If you don’t have breadcrumbs on hand, you can even crush up cornflakes for a crunchy coating that works well in this air fryer tofu wings recipe.
  • Avocado oil:
This is a great alternative to olive oil due to its higher smoke point, making it perfect for air fryer recipes. You can also substitute it with canola oil or vegetable oil if needed.

Additional Tools You’ll Need:

  • Heavy pan or tofu press:
To achieve crispy tofu, you’ll need to press out as much moisture as possible from the tofu block. Use a tofu press or place a heavy pan on top of the tofu, wrapped in paper towels or a clean kitchen towel, to remove the excess liquid.
  • Large mixing bowl:
For coating the tofu, a large mixing bowl helps to evenly distribute the batter and breadcrumbs, making the breading process easier and less messy.
  • Resealable plastic bag:
If you’re short on time, throw the tofu cubes into a resealable plastic bag with the breading mixture and shake it to coat them quickly and evenly.
  • Parchment paper:
Line your air fryer basket or baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking, ensuring that the tofu wings cook evenly and come out crispy every time.

Perfect for Any Occasion:

These vegan buffalo tofu wings are a perfect appetizer for any game day or movie night. Whether you’re hosting a party or just enjoying a quiet night in, these tofu wings are sure to be a hit. They’re quick and easy to make, making them a great option for anyone new to cooking with tofu.

And the best part? If you’re making these in advance, you can store any leftovers in a freezer-safe container. When you’re ready to enjoy them again, simply reheat in the air fryer, and they’ll be just as crispy as the first time you made them.

Not only is this recipe a fun twist on classic chicken wings, but it’s also a perfect appetizer for anyone looking for a plant-based alternative that doesn’t compromise on flavor or crunch. Don’t forget to save the recipe by printing out the recipe card or bookmarking it for your next game day snack!

Why Use an Air Fryer?

Air fryers are a game-changer for tofu recipes. They help create a crispy exterior without the need for excess oil, making it healthier than deep frying. The cooking time is also faster, and the results are always consistent—crispy vegan wings on the outside and tender on the inside.

Pressing the Tofu:

To get the best results, always press tofu before cooking. Wrap your tofu block in a kitchen towel or paper towels and place a heavy object like a pan or tofu press on top. This step removes excess moisture and ensures the tofu achieves a crispy texture when air-fried.

Freezing and Thawing the Tofu for Texture:

If you’re looking for tofu with a chewier, meatier texture, try freezing and thawing the tofu block before cooking. This process helps the tofu absorb more flavor from the batter and buffalo sauce.

Preparing the Batter:

In a small bowl, mix the cornstarch and soy milk until you achieve a smooth consistency. The batter should be thick enough to stick to the tofu pieces without being too runny. This mixture is key for creating that golden, crispy exterior.

Breading the Tofu Wings:

In another medium bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs, paprika, and black pepper. Dip each piece of tofu first into the batter, then roll it in the breadcrumb mixture, ensuring the tofu is evenly coated. For extra crunch, press the breadcrumbs firmly onto the tofu pieces.

Cooking Time and Temperature for Air Fryer Buffalo Tofu

Place the breaded tofu wings in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook at 390°F for about 8 minutes, flipping halfway through for even crispiness. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook the tofu wings in batches. Make sure they are in an even layer with space in between each tofu piece.

Making the Buffalo Sauce:

Melt the vegan butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the Franks buffalo wing sauce and garlic powder, stirring until well combined. For those who prefer extra spicy wings, use the full 10 tbsp of sauce; if you want less heat, stick with 7 tbsp.

Oven Method for Tofu Wings:

Don’t have an air fryer? No problem! You can bake your tofu wings in the oven. Preheat to 425°F and bake for 30-35 minutes, flipping the wings halfway through. This will still give you that crispy perfection you’re craving.

Serving Suggestions:

Serve your buffalo tofu wings with your favorite dipping sauce. Vegan ranch dressing or bleu cheese are popular choices, but you can also try pairing them with BBQ sauce or even a tangy mustard dip.

Tips and Tricks for the Best Buffalo Tofu Wings:

Storing and Reheating Leftovers:

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. To reheat, pop them back into the air fryer or oven until crispy. Avoid the microwave, as it will make the tofu soggy.

Buffalo Tofu Wraps and More:

These buffalo tofu bites are incredibly versatile. They make a great addition to wraps, sandwiches, or even on top of salads. Try a buffalo tofu wrap with lettuce, tomatoes, and vegan ranch dressing for a filling meal.
