Ingredients & Substitutions
Base Ingredients
- Canned Chickpeas (Garbanzo Beans): Canned chickpeas are a convenient choice, but feel free to use cooked dry chickpeas if you prefer. Just ensure they’re fully cooked and dried for extra crispiness, creating the perfect spicy roasted chickpeas recipe.
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil: This oil adds flavor and helps the seasonings stick to the chickpeas. You can substitute with avocado oil or another high-heat oil if desired.
- Smoked Paprika: Smoked paprika gives a slight smokiness to the chickpeas. For a milder flavor, try regular paprika.
- Hot Chili Powder: The star ingredient for spice! Adjust the amount to your taste or substitute with cayenne pepper or red pepper flakes for extra heat.
- Seasoning Salt & Black Pepper: Adds essential seasoning to enhance the flavor of the chickpeas.
Optional Flavor Boosters
- Nutritional Yeast: Adds a cheesy, nutty flavor to the chickpeas, perfect for vegan diets.
- Brown Sugar: A touch of sweetness balances the spices.
- Garlic Powder: Adds a savory depth to the spice mix.
- Curry Powder or Garam Masala: Try these for a unique twist!

- Paper Towels or Kitchen Towel: Essential for drying chickpeas before roasting to ensure they crisp up.
- Medium Bowl: Ideal for tossing chickpeas with oil and spices.
- Spatula: Perfect for flipping chickpeas halfway through baking.
- Airtight Container: Keeps leftovers fresh and crunchy.
How to Make Crispy Spicy Chickpeas
- Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Prep the Chickpeas: Spread the chickpeas on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Use a kitchen towel or paper towels to gently pat them dry and remove any extra moisture.

- Season the Chickpeas: In a medium bowl, toss the chickpeas with olive oil, seasoning salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, and hot chili powder. Add nutritional yeast if you like a cheesy flavor.
- Bake: Spread the seasoned chickpeas in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through to ensure even crispiness.

- Check for Doneness: Remove the chickpeas when they’re crispy and golden brown. Perfect for crunchy snack or to place on the top of a salad, soup or more!

Tips & Tricks for Perfect Crispy Chickpea Results
- Pat the Chickpeas Dry: Extra moisture will prevent the chickpeas from crisping up, so make sure they’re thoroughly dried with paper towels or a kitchen towel.
- Use Fresh Spices: Freshly opened spices offer stronger flavors, making a big difference in taste.
- Don’t Crowd the Pan: Spread the chickpeas in a single layer to allow air circulation, ensuring they cook evenly.
- Experiment with Spices: Customize the spice blend to suit your taste. Garlic powder, cumin, or even a hint of brown sugar can add a unique twist.
- Try an Air Fryer: For an even quicker method, air fry at medium-high heat for about 12-15 minutes.
Ways to Enjoy Crispy Spicy Chickpeas
- Salad Topper: Substitute croutons with crispy chickpeas for added crunch.
- Grain Bowls: Sprinkle on top of quinoa or rice bowls for texture and protein.
- Chickpea Snacks: Enjoy on their own as a healthy snack.
- Soup Garnish: Add to creamy soups for a spicy kick.
- Mix into Fattoush Salad: Adds a savory element to classic Middle Eastern salads.
Storage Tips for Freshness
To keep your crispy spicy chickpeas fresh, let them cool completely, then store in an airtight container or glass jar. They should stay crispy at room temperature for up to 3 days. Avoid refrigerating, as this can introduce moisture and soften the chickpeas. That way you can keep these crispy roasted chickpeas fresh as possible.
Nutritional Benefits of Chickpeas
Packed with protein, fiber, and essential nutrients, chickpeas are a great addition to any diet. Each serving of chickpeas provides grams of protein, making them a satisfying, plant-based snack.

Why Use Canned Chickpeas?
Using canned chickpeas is a convenient way to make this recipe in minutes. Canned chickpeas are readily available at grocery stores and provide a similar texture to chickpeas you’d cook yourself, minus the preparation time.
Air Fryer Alternative
If you have an air fryer, it’s a great way to cook these chickpeas with less oil. Simply preheat the air fryer, toss the chickpeas in spices, and cook for 12-15 minutes, shaking halfway through.

These Roasted chickpeas are so good! 😊
Thank you so much!
Yum this was tasty!! Do you think you can let me know how to make them in the air fryer?
Thank you so much!! You can throw these in the air fryer at 390 for 10-12 mins or until crispy. Keep a close eye on them as every air fryer is different! Some air fryers will need a little parchment paper to put the chickpeas on. With mine, I just take out the inserts and put the chickpeas in the bottom of the non-stick basket. Hope that helps!
