In a shallow bowl or baking dish whisk together soy sauce, liquid smoke, olive oil, maple syrup, paprika and onion powder.
Cut the tempeh into 12 equal strips and place into the marinade. Allow to marinate for at least 15 mins.
Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees. (Air fryer, and stovetop directions are in the notes below)
Place the tempeh strips on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 mins. Flip the tempeh, and brush with the marinade. Bake for another 10 mins.

Pan Fried Version: Cook in a pan on medium heat with a little oil for 3-4 minutes per side. (These are delicious cooked on a cast iron)Air Fryer: Cook in the air fryer at 375 degrees for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway.
